The Crisis for Single Women

The statistics for single women are appalling:

1. According to the Department of Housing there are 19,000 empty forclosed homes formerly owned by single women in the USA that are deteriorating for lack of care and vandalism.

2. The home repair industry estimates the average empty forclosed house will require an additional investmest of $50 Thousand Dollars or more to renovate it into a habitable home.

3. Given the same status on a mortgage, a single mother with children is twelve times more likely to be dispossed from her home than a family with a resident father.

4. According to the Department of Welfare almost 2000 single women with school-aged children became homeless during the third quarter of 2008 according to their records; and they estimate as many as another 6000 are not in their records.

5. Single women are five times more likely to be laid off from their job than a man doing the same job with comparable skills. (This is true even though national averages indicate the man is being paid almost 35% more than a woman doing the same job.)

6. Men injured on the job are seven times more likely to collect disability than a woman with comparable injuries. (The men get disability and the women get fired.)

7. The number of homeless women and children in America is increasing more rapidly than the number of homeless men; and the services available to homeless women and children is decreasing more rapidly than services for men. Several social services agencies consider homelessness of women and children an alarming and unconscionable epidemic.
